Need advice wheel selection

Print Post
I just bought a used mountain bike from a friend to start riding again.  The other day I was replacing the tires and noticed a dent in the rear wheel where the bead meets the rim.  So, I am looking to replace the wheels.  Do you guys or gals have any suggestions on what to get for 3-400 dollars.  I prefer to buy local.  BTW they are 26" wheels.  Thanks, Orly

Walk into a couple local shops and ask what they have in stock. Most guys are going 29er these days so you may have good luck finding a shop with a set of 26in wheels that have been sitting there for a while they can cut you a deal on.

To be honest, if you aren't "back in the sport" yet, and you're buying a used bike, I'm not sure I'd drop $400 on a new set of wheels right away.

Then again, I'm cheap. So take that for what it's worth.

Sorry - I also take umbrage with the "most guys are going 29er these days." I would have that read "most old guys are going 29er these days" or somesuch. Now before everyone freaks out and calls me a troll (cycle path) and we have a 26er / 29er debate (again) I just want to say I mean no offense. When I'm old and just want to roll over everything, I too will go 29er. I'm 34 and looking at 29ers for my next bike (I'm not kidding).

Heh heh heh.

To clear things up Trkker1, I have been mountain biking since the early 80's.  A couple of years back I quit riding because most of my time was taken up with kart racing.  Now my doctor has banned me from racing, among other things.  So biking is one of the options I enjoy, but cannot do unaccompanied.  I was excited when I learned that there were casual rides posted here, that I could join.  So I was able to find a bike to get started, unfortunately I think the rear wheel wont hold up if I start riding more frequently.

I would have expected someone to already say this but...

If it is a quality wheelset and the rim is damaged, then buy a new rim and have someone/LBS rebuild it for you.

If it is a crap wheelset with a now damaged crap rim, either:

A) buy another crap wheelset to thrash on til you can stop bending rims

B) buy a good wheelset and hopefully stop bending rims

If you're hitting lines like a sack of anvils, then you're gonna need a strong ($$$) wheelset, or learn some finesse to keep a good wheelset alive.

Actually the wheel was damaged by the previous owner. I will probably take your advice and have the rim replaced, instead of buying a set of wheels.  Thanks

Kart, I think what trekker was eluding to was if the tire is still holding air and not rolling off the rim, you can still run the rim until you get more time in the saddle to gauge how much you want to spend on the replacement.  Rim or complete wheel.  There are many bikes out on the trails right now with dented rims like you.  If you want absolute advice you can post a picture and someone will surely chime in or take it to Jerry or your LBS to have it evaluated.  But know ahead of time that the LBS is there to sell you things, that's what keeps them in business.

Mea culpa, I just wanted to make sure I didn't come across wrong. I am very glad whenever anyone is riding a bike. I don't care if they are brand new to it or coming back after a long time, whether they are riding for pleasure or fitness or necessity. It is a good thing and I'm glad you are doing it.

And good equipment is important. I only mean to suggest that you can find good wheels at reasonable prices and they aren't the first $$$ upgrade I would invest in.

I started out on a $375 Trek 4300. I rode it often as fast as I could for three years. The wheels did fine. My Fuel Ex 8 I ride a lot harder - on factory wheels.

Bang for your buck? Most important upgrade is tires. I prefer Specialized The Captains BTW. 2.0 in rear, 2.25 in front. That will drastically improve your riding for about $100.

That's all I was saying.

It's possible. I mean, I "see" the boat and all, I just feel okay where I am for right now. I haven't spent any trail time on a 29er so I really can't judge them either way.

I did read an interesting article recently, however, where they compared the same bike in 26, 27.5, and 29 versions and, surprisingly, the bike they enjoyed the least was the 27.5. The old stereotypes held up, 26ers were more nimble and accelerated quicker; 29ers rolled easier (carried more momentum) and ate up the chatter more comfortably. They said the 27.5 was sort of the boring compromise (Jack of all trades, master of none) that wasn't as agile or fun as a 26er, and couldn't roll obstacles like a 29er. I want to say it was the Specialized Stump Jumper, but can't be sure.

Like I said, next bike will be a 29er, but I'll always keep my 26ers handy as well.

Bottom line - everybody rides what they like.

I think it was Scott or KHS.  They won't do a 3 bike like that for the SJ because the last year of the SJ FSR 26 is 2014 and the first year of the SJ FSR 650b is 2015. Smiley
