Truck - Where to put bikes

So I just got a new truck.  I've always used roof racks so it's going to change up a bit.

Are most of you doing hitch racks?  Or are you doing the mat over the tailgate?

Does the bike still slide around a lot with just using the mat?

Thanks,

Brad

I have a Honda Ridgeline with a pull out cover for the bed.  The cover can be retracted and I installed the following fork mount on the front of the cover.

This works really well for even the Honda Ridgeline given the shorter bed.  The best part is I have an actual trunk in the bed to store the front wheel and all my bike gear.

I have used a truck pad since I got mine in 2012. It is great, take literally 2 seconds to load or unload a bike and I have fit 6 or 7 bikes across the back, as long as your careful. I don't have an issue with them sliding around or falling over as long as I don't drive like an idiot and that only happens in the mountains have never had any issues around here. I would recommend doing a 3m clear downtube protector otherwise the pad will rash the bottom of the frame.

I have the Thule version. I like it better than the dakine since it goes further down the tailgate.

Also there is still enough room in the bed to put a Thule rooftop bag for waterproof luggage storage and a handfull of other gear and toolboxes that you don't get if you use an in bed mount system and you can still tow a trailer.

If you think you might want a camper shell get the hitch rack. If not a 2x4 and this

is all you need. Been using one for years. Shuttle pads are nice too but I like the security of a bolt in rack. Pads are nice though because you don't have to remove your wheel.

I've been throwing mine in the bed on its side. No rack needed.

My bikes aren't "Enduro" enough to hang over the tailgate.

Do what you like. Stop hating people for their riding habits and get back to hating them for their skin color, religion, politics, and sexual orientation.

Come on man!!!  You know you're gonna have a couple or more boats in there.  Just bungee cord the crap out of what you're pedaling when you're not paddling and you'll be fine.   Cheesy

If your talking about being able to lock it in. I just run a cable lock through my tie downs. If you have the odd size torx bit to unbolt them you prob are ready to steal anything and its not going matter what its locked to.

I have and like the insta-gator (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) for solo carry

Also use a Dakine shuttle mat (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links) on days when the crew needs to run 6-7 bikes up the Mtn.

A Locking tailgate and Python cable lock help keep the bike relatively safe. An intent thief will steal no matter what you try to do.

I really don't understand having a hitch rack on a pick-up... for years I just threw it in the back and while other people are messing around with the rack I'm already half way home Smiley These days I mostly use the dakine pad.

I think I'm going with a hitch rack simply because I really want to put a cover over the truck bed.

Best of both worlds: roof rack safety and lower down so you don't need a ladder. Plus you can throw your kayak underneath.

Doing the same thing here soon. Camper tops are the shizzzzz.

Instant place to sleep out of the rain and provides more surface area for stickers.

Which rack you going with?

For right now I just ordered a Tonneau cover.  I wish I had the 2k for a truck cap right now, but I'm hoping within a year to get one.

This is my setup.  Works well.  Can add another rack or 2 if I get creative.  Just make sure the hard tonneau cover is locked down good.

I didn't want a hitch carrier as I can't close my garage door, I didn't want something I had to take a wheel off, and I didn't want something I had to climb into my bed to use.

I went with this:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I modified it to run on my tie down rails.  I can fold it down to use my tonneau cover or remove most of it by unscrewing one hand screw.

FourMat,

Did you have to change out/add to your lift shock on the cover to accommodate the increased weight of the rack and bikes?

No, but it depends on how many bikes are on it.  I did get another set of shocks with the intention of running 2 per side, but really it's only been a concern when I have more than 2 bikes, or its so cold that the pressure is reduced.  What I end up doing is carrying a Mac Tools collapsible hood prop with me to keep it from bashing my head if it falls.
