When wearing a wool jersey, do you wear it next to your skin ? Or should you wear a base layer ?

I'd base layer it! May be hot though after you get warmed up.

It's better to base layer it.

If it's merino, it's comfortable to wear next to your skin. But the base layer is also there in case you need to peel. I normally wear a synthetic sleeveless top or t-shirt under a jersey. Long sleeve if the temps warrant it.

+1

Definitely wear a base layer. Wool doesn't breathe very well so you need something to at least attempt to let air get to your skin.

Def base layer it.  Personally I think wool is overkill here.  Back in NY I'd rock it during core winter months......but here 2 or 3 breathable layers and you should be fine IMHO.  A light shell jacket that blocks the wind also does wonders IMO.

I wear my 'sportwool' (merino wool / poly blend which is knitted with the merino on the skin side and plot on the exterior) jersey directly on the skin and if it gets too cold (below 50 for me) then a light merino wool baselayer beneath it.

I wear all wool this time of year, base layers included. If it's under 50*, I'll break out my wool bibs too (Ibex - love those things).

My personal rule is wool in winter. It breathes better than any synthetic, and will retain all its insulation properties when wet.

I'll be layering up with wool the next few days. It's going to 8 degrees for a low and 16 degrees for the high, so I'll be trying to stay warm. Needless to say, I won't be riding my bike for awhile!
BTW, come up and ski or ride your snowboard if you get the opportunity.

LS merino wool baselayer, SS jersey on top until it gets below 40 - then I put a LS jersey over the baselayer. Unless you're riding in the early morning, I find it doesn't get too cold to hit the trails in that.
