Winter Short Track for 2019

Print Post
For those who believe in rumors, please stop...

2019 Winter Short Track will be happening. Dates will be announced soon.
Renni is not lost. The dump and repair of the dump are all on the fields and open lands. The trail is in the woods and for the most part is not located over the old dump. We are getting ready to sign an MOU to expand the trails and will officially start this fall rebuilding and add trail back.

So believe the hype, Renni will rise again and Winter Short Track is coming!

I STRONGLY approve this message. Cool  Glad to hear it's coming back.  I too had heard from several sources Winter Short Track had died the same death as the Summer Series.

People be cray...

Summer Series Struggled to get 30 riders there
Winter Shortrack has 300+riders per race. Not Ded!

Now to figure out what new additions will be coming to the course for 2019............

Looking forward to some Renni work dates over the fall/winter to not get fat over the holidays.

There has been a mix up in the messaging.  The Winter Series will be back, but the RAIN has been cancelled.

Looking forward to it - fun races.  As long as fun means a heart rate of 1000 and your tongue in the spokes.

It is official!  For those who hadn't heard yet, the dates for this winter's series have been posted to their site and also announced on FB.  Still awaiting confirmation that the rain has been cancelled.   Cheesy

Talked to Rain and he can't do the whole series but said he would try to make it out when he can.  Also said to be on the lookout for his cousins Ice and Snow.   They have been known to make an appearance too!

Sometimes we even have rain ice and snow all on the same day.  They have beaten me once, and I still have the scars to prove it!

Signed up for Sunday’s race this afternoon. Had a chance to ride the trail last week prior to the Enchalada and it was pretty darn fun. Been a while since I was there last and hadn’t seen the new exit from the woods. Looked pretty cool but couldn’t quite figure out if the more techy short cut was faster or not. Any opinions?

I'd agree that it's faster... if you stay on the bike.  Bobble and run... depends on the quality of the bobble and the speed of the run.

Also, traffic.  Someone screws it up in front of you and then you ded.  Ask me how I know that.

So, for those of us new to the MTB racing world.  The short track series is small distance single track sprints?  What kind of distance/laps are we talking about?  Are you racing for fastest laptime or physical position?

I wouldnt mind giving something like this a whirl as long as I don't embarrass myself on too badly.

Should be right at 1 mile laps. You’ll race for overall/physical position. Depending on what category you sign up for, race time will be 30-45-60 minutes. Expect 4-5 minute laps. This will give you a good guideline to go by.

Definitely faster with a clean run. Avoid if the conditions are sloppy, didn’t see many folk hitting it last year when the trail was muddy.

Yeah, I'm surprised there hasn't been any feed back on the race. Was going to drop in to watch a bit but ended up having to do household chores  Sad

Glad you guys had a dry sunny day for it. Weather was perfect.

Tempted to give it a go but not too sure about trying to lug my 33lbs enduro bike around the course for 45mins at race pace. I suspect with my current fitness I'll be a mobile chicane.

What’s great is all the kids that came out to enjoy the fun.  Probably had 75 kids or so.

Give the races a shot - the lap times vary from mid 4 minutes to mid 6 minutes, so there will always be someone to race against.  Total race times from about 30 minutes for the easier divisions to 45 to 60 for the harder ones.

The course dries surprisingly fast.  Last week it poured the night before and by the afternoon it was pretty darn good.

Fun stuff!

Another fun weekend of short track in the books.  Despite practicing the "pro line" (I wish there was a better name for this" out of the woods roughly 5,000 times Saturday, I still psyched myself out and screwed it up in the race.

Otherwise, great trail conditions and some awesome racing, even in the AARP division.  I was proud to drop my lap times by 20 seconds.  Progress! (or dry trails).

It is embarrassing getting crushed by some dude on a rigid single speed wearing cutoff shorts and a tank top though.  Smiley

When is the next blog post, Rich?

I believe it was this dude "The Suffer Club" an up & coming YouTuber, rider & racer with a cool passion for doing this! Here's his channel, in which his coverage of WST Race 1 was pretty intense. (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links); He did some more recording & did a few interviews of the youth.

There's a huge "underground" mountain bike scene in Charlotte that just shows up to race on club built trails, keeps their trails (Dixie River, and BYT back in the day) to themselves and never posts on the board.

The hecklers yelled out that they would be checking for AARP cards at the finish line in the masters class.

If I wasn't already about to vomit, I would have been laughing pretty hard.  There was also a guy who would heckle AND cheer us on with some positive stuff - nice work 659! That was really cool.  Every little bit helps my failing old brain!

They asked my friend with plus tires and a large camel back if he was going camping after the race.

Indeed the rock hecklers were not on their game this week.  Perhaps the rock obstacle is now passé in favor of the A-line heckling?

And where was the guy with the bacon this week.  What are we racing for if bacon is not involved?

I think that was Jake, I didn't see him for race 2.  I didn't get heckled any at the "pro" line; mostly encouragements and I even screwed it up the last time!

Just a clarification: Dixie is not open because its not complete and there is no parking. Once both of those tasks are checked off it will be open to the public

FWIW: If you guys aren't scrolling through Mario Quivera's photos over on on SuperCycling, you're missing out.  He's getting some incredible shots AND has them up at a very reasonable price.  As little as $5 going to the man who stood out there all day to get your glamour shot.

Throw some money at him.

Not sure my wife would approve of me paying $5 for a picture of you Dicky. I would certainly pay that for a picture of my son this Sunday in the Kids free race.

In the "small victories department" I was pumped to make the A-line every lap this week.  Whoop!

On the other hand, I felt kind of flat and tired this week, and my lap times showed it.  Maybe riding 6 days out of 7 wasn't such a good plan.

Who cares, it was fun!  And heckler support at the A-line, to boot!

Yeah, Sunday can be a bad day to race if you are looking for peak performance.  Especially if Saturday is your long ride day.  No worries, though. Like you said, still fun and a great way to add some intensity into your riding.

Anyone else think they should open up the course for more ST where you go over the A line instead of dumping onto the gravel road? I remember in the summer series a couple of years ago we had some ST was down that way.

Maybe make it a "dry only" situation to spice things up? No idea what this section of trail looks like now, but yeah, just something to keep evolving as the years go on!

Da section in blue, you dump out in that short opening where the gravel berms are now, then you would then make a left into the S/F chute currently setup.

As much as I'd rather be in the woods, if you take away the gravel, you get rid of the majority of the passing opportunities.  Lapped riders can add crucial seconds to a lap in such a short period of time already.  I'd hate to be stuck in slower traffic any more than is already happening.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a dumb single speeder racing 50+ who loses a butt ton of time to the other riders when they open it up on the gravel/pavement.  It doesn't play into my favor.

I'm all for making more technical options and rewarding those who can get through them quickly.  Way, way back in the day (think dinosaurs) the NORBA pro course in Traverse City had at least four sections that had options, one technical and one way longer.  I can only remember the log pile (where Travis Brown broke his collar bone in practice, dashing his Olympic dreams) and a huge gap over small pond with an 4' inflatable alligator in it.  Folks like Tinker and Tomac getting crazy air time while their rivals went the long way around.  Soooo good.

The fact that I can't find one image on the internet is great disappoint.

Signed,

Stupid in Charlotte

Or pop back onto the gravel after some more woods, just not all the way to the parking lot.

Worth a try for next year?  We could build a new A line!  Or would it be a C line?

Wears_ my_Ding_Dong (or whatever Big 'n Buttery calls himself here) has plans for more things for 2020.

This year we I only built the 1 new berm to let the trail settle a bit before making more changes. We had three years in a row with big changes each year and it was a struggle this year. Also, i need to fix the double drop downhill we built last year to make it more stable and more fun. That is a project i have planned for the summer.

But yes, for 2020 there will be some more evolution to the trail like we saw in the past to keep interest high. But right now i think we have almost the right balance between gravel and trail with my desire to add a little more trail, maybe 10% more.

But there are a few things i have to work on for next year:

The city will be building a new building which is located on the fenced in yard. There may be some reroutes to get around construction.
Fix the double drop downhill
add more options features for risk reward vs more trail. The A line B line has been really effective in adding a strategy/fitness/skill element and would love more of those. Caveat is Neal does not want any on trail merger points and i do not blame him due to the risk of collisions. The A line B line works because it dumps onto the gravel road and leave room to mess up and merge.
Making the berms bigger and continuing to armor the trail.
A section of the gravel road may get split into trail on the left and right which merges back on the road. A choose your path decision of equal lenth, and making the trail a flow trail/pump track section.
Adding another Aline B Line somewhere on another climb.

I also have some other land which may add trail to the front third before you punch back into the woods. It would add another downhill section and climb, with the goal of keeping the same fast action which makes the series fun.

Lots of ideas as i like making the trail fresh every year.

kudos to you! in my dreams i see a course that could be altered every once and a while to keep it fresh and different every week, i know having multiple trail options for an "all weather" course is tough, but it seems that you guys already have a solid downpour course, would be awesome to branch off just a tad and make the laps longer, or at least different week to week!

let me know how i can help.
