Is the course announced yet?  Whole or half?

I know the trails... Not the route.

I think they keep the route a secret until day of. It’s a feature, not a bug.

Last year they posted the route about 2 weeks before the race. Then they changed it slightly the day of the race, I think.

They started everyone out on the gravel trail around the access road to spread everybody out. They also sent waves of riders out to help spread out the pack, worked pretty well.  They will probably do the same this year.

For the whole, you ended the race riding East Main, I'd be happier if we started on that when I was fresher.

Courses are up on the USNWC website. Looks like about 24 miles for the half and 43 for the whole

Last year I'm pretty sure it rained a bit the week leading up to the race and they held it anyways, as what seems to be the typical case with race days.

ya, no way they wont run the race. unless it's a monsoon.

seemsl ike the course still has that strange crossover from academy/thread trail/needle. last year it was a little confusing so i hope that they looked into a way of making this idiot proof!

Rode about 80% of the course yesterday. The trails were actually in good shape but Prairie Dog was a mess and also the field section on Bandit. Honestly after riding out at Catawba for 20 years, in all types of conditions I have to finally say that slipping, sliding, and skidding through a thorny field was still fun but I wouldn't do the race if conditions are the same on race day. I've gotten to a point that the wear and tear on my drivetrain is just not worth it anymore.
Lets all just hope the rain gives up trying to drown us.

I guess Upper Thread and the Needle will be open by then?

Also wondering, I don't see anything about aid stations/water stops anywhere on the maps.  43 miles self supported?

I think there was 2 of them last year. There was one when you came out of Toilet Bowl and then I think the other one was when you came out of Academy and have to go back into Academy, near the parking lot and gravel road.

Mebbe I'll hit them up on FaceBook to update the site or course.  That's great info to know when you're riding 43 miles.

Cobbler served on a rabbit?

Assuming if you're old, you remember this USNWC delicacy.

New maps (now with Aid Stations) and some other changes since the last one, I think.

They said on FB that Aid 1 & 3 are hydration only, aid 2 hydration and nutrition.

Thanks yes the course has some different directions but looks like fun. Never ridden this trail so it will be a little bit of a challenge.

It looks like you go from Thread over to Bandit/Smokey/Panda, and then after riding those back over to needle (the return portion of Thread). My question is :  Do you have to go over Belmeade a couple of times, or is there another way (tunnell, under a bridge, power line access)?

Anyone know?

No tunnel or Bridge but I recall "bike crossing" signs on Belmeade.   Maybe not-only rode that side once.
I did pause for a few seconds to cross Belmeade to let a car clear each time across but it wasn't a scary crossing by any means.  Might be more heavy traffic on a school day or rush hour but on Saturday morning it's not going to be a big deal-just pay attention before you jump into the road.

I think it that side is a great addition to the park.  Panda is nothing to write home about/beginner style trail but the Smoke and Bandit were good fun.

interested to see how the road crossing will play out. its pretty late in the lap so stopping traffic for everyone cross will be tough...

also good/smart call on WWC to have an aid station near the strange crossover section, should help with people getting confused like last year! kudos for making improvements from feedback given.

I wouldn't be worried about crossing the road, its having to mush through all that field mud if this rain does not go away.

Instead of an aid station I would love to see a bike wash station with free chain lube at the halfway point. Everyone gets a 5 min break to clean off that Catawba red clay.

ciao

This is me too, except I'm not fast or famous.......also, on a plus SS because I'm stoopid.

I asked them to put a SS cat in last year. I think they replied that not many people would opt for it, so no.

They have a certain amount of success already in hand.  59 in the 18-39 M and 54 in the 39+ M...  120+ total finishers last year.

With those kinda numbers, you can usually draw even more people off the fence with additional classes.  There are those people that won't enter unless they got some shot at something.  Podium, top five, top ten... whatever strokes the ego hard enough.

I'd just be doing it because it's Mt Everest.  Not that it's an ultimate, life-altering, possible-death experience, just that "it's there."  I mean, like right there.  Twenty minutes from my house.

Besides, what better way to get ready for five weekends in a row of intense 45 minute bursts of painful, blood-outta-my-eyes effort?

I only have IKON and ASPEN tires so it needs to stop raining. After 21 years of sliding around in the mud at Catawba I am almost over it.

But that does look fun.

Wonder if the aid station will be handing out milk and bread for the snow event?  If only it was cold enough to freeze the mud bogs over....

Whole enchilada, half enchilada, Lexington NC short track, Irmo 50, or stay inside and watch it snow.

Hmmm.  With a dry week in the forecast (now I've blown it) I think we have to eat the whole enchilada when we can get it!

I do not trust weather news in Charlotte so i normally check only for 2 days at a time. I will be there anyway.

Weather Underground has it now starting to rain or whatever around 4pm. I hope to be home by then.

Freezing temps compared to muddy conditions. Doing this race is starting to sound like a bad idea.
My oatmeal creme pies will freeze.

You must have a limited imagination...

They (the people who control the weather machine) are delaying the rain dispersal till later, but mang... I hate riding all-out in low to mid thirties.

Hmmmm...

Half Enchilada starts an hour later.

Cold weather-finger hack    -

Put on a pair of those cheap, disposable latex gloves under your full fingered MTB gloves... you won’t notice they’re on and your fingers will actually sweat.

The map changed (again) and we're back down to 45 miles and crossing Belmeade right across from the school.

They do on purpose to mess you up! They will never get me since i have never ridden those trials. To me it is all the same "lacrime e sangue" (Blood and tears in Italian). They can add whatever they want i will be dead anyway.

I'm plotting where to cut the course.  Or where not to inadvertently end up going the wrong way on the course.

There's several spots with two way traffic!

You go first.  No you go first.

Like figure 8 racing at a demolition derby.  The whole smokey bandit panda area is going to be interesting for sure.  I hope I don't get stuck out there going in circles for an hour.

I think that area will be fine; there is only a short section now that they added the new entrance that is two way and its plenty wide.  What is going to be interesting  is the gravel down to prairie; gonna be some crashes and some funneling.

This was not an issue last year, everything was well sorted out before we got onto the main road. Start hard bros

Hopefully so; last race I did there there were people riding all out for the dash to the woods then half of front 30 couldn't even make the climb up Figure 8 Grin.

Huge shout out to Pearl for his 8th place finish and Santana for his 11th place finish in the Masters division in yesterday’s Whole Enchalada. You guys must have went for the fire sauce right out of the gate!  I know there were more Trail Blazers out there & huge props to all who braved the cold for a great day on the trails.  Anybody have a story to share?

You were correct, there wasn't an issue going into single track - except the flat I got on bandit  Grin

Thanks bros, I was able to hang with the front group for the first 15 minutes or so until I couldn't keep up, then just settled into the "chase" group and did my own thing. I'll write a longer recap this morning.

In the meantime, where the photos at!? I saw a bunch of people out in the woods.

Firstly, Pearl... you're almost twenty years younger than me?

Good gorb.  You got me by about thirty seconds per year.

All I remember about the start was a quick moment with Dung, seeing some of the leaders make a wrong turn (srsly, the USNWC shoulda had someone there directing people), and then Santana and I agreeing that we both trusted each other's decision to not follow.

Skinny?  I'm about fifteen pounds heavier than I was in May '17.

I got work to do and beer to not drink.

Yeah, that was a bad spot for them to have marked like that. I think minus that one hiccup (granted I don't think it made that much of a difference in the race) it was pretty well marked. When everyone locked them up and thought that was the way to go, I was THEE front of the race. just for one second. I did not like it.

Agreed.  I never felt anything was terribly vague the rest of the day.

Although, when we came back over to East Main and were near Prarie, seeing pulled up arrows and tape off to the side of the trail had me worried about course sabotage.  I quickly realized they had to move it from the start loop, but I've done enough races that have suffered from sabotage, it gave me cause to pause for a few seconds.

And I even knew where I should be going.

damn, I'm usually pretty good with details but couldn't remember that. I was more amazed with how off my garmin was with mileage, I was trying to figure out how I could possibly have another 10 miles when my garmin was reading 30~, I finished with 37.6 miles  Roll Eyes

Do you have a wheel sensor, or do you just go with GPS?

USNWC posted this prior to the race

"We have measured the course using multiple GPS devices, as well as analog. Each of the devices came back with mileage varying up to 11 miles. To ensure accuracy and consistency, this course was officially measured and mileage was determined by analog. The Whole Enchilada came in at 45 miles and The Half Enchilada came in at 23 miles."

There's a reason I don't think I'll ever go GPS.  I can't stand the look of the hub tumor, so until they do something less obtrusive, I'm out.

just a GPS that i end up using just for time when racing anyways, i should probably just get a timex watch instead

I tried a watch (on my wrist), but at races with long descents like the Breck Epic, it was digging into my skin.

I could put a foam donut on my bars, but what is this?  Polar HRM 1996?  Wait... you weren't even a teenager yet.

I usually put this Cateye (without a wheel sensor) on my bike when I need to know the time... like at PMBAR.  I so shoulda mounted it at TWE.  Woulda been stoked to know it was gonna be an sub-four hour day.

I still have the magnet and sensor... somewhere.  I think.

Thats the thingy I use for my wheel with my garmin. I can't stand it when my mileage isnt accurate. I use that Garmin watch that has a square-ish shape, it doesnt dig into my wrist.  (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);

I have six of those cateyes with wheel sensors in both black and white that were all take offs from over the years sitting in my spare parts bin.  If you need a replacement or spare, let me know.  Free to a good home.

The only part of the race I thought could stand some fixin was the end of Academy, with the two way section up a short hill.

I ended up pushing my bike up that hill in the weeds to get by the barrage of people coming down the hill to start academy.

Seems like widening that section or somehow letting the folks coming down they should yield to folks who are 30 minutes ahead of them would be helpful.

Other than that, it was a hoot.  Maybe I'll be dumb enough to ride the full next year.

Pretty sure Pearl meant that if they allowed us access to the images, we would share them on our socials, thus giving the race more exposure at no expense to USNWC.

All I got for my $50 (+ $6 for parking) was a good time, and I guess some support on course (that I didn't take the time to utilize).  Pretty much what I paid for.

I didn't sign up early enough for the socks.  I did get the stainless steel beer glass... which I put in my stainless steel beer glass cupboard... with all my other stainless steel beer glasses.

The M&M's were really cold. I grabbed a cup full of M&M's, well 2 cups really and held them in my mouth for like 1.4 miles before I gave in and just chewed them up. I thought they were still great.

So now onto a more serious note. How many competitors in the Whole Enchilada race cut the course? As in omitting Tower trail or Wedge Trail or Weigh Station?

ciao

based on strava fly by, not many people did at the spots you mentioned...

i thought they did a pretty good job at marking the course, so if someone did cut the course, they did it knowingly, not by accident

yeah, I wasn't confused at any point, even on the new stuff that I did not know at all.  I did think Thread was particularly leafy, which at times had me looking for the trail.  I know it well so wasn't too hard for me, but I wonder if others had issues.

Last year when I did the Whole, I know of at least 3 people who cut the course. They were on my Strava. Two of their faces I know and they were behind me, never passed me, but finished before me. (thats a sweet trick!  Smiley )

It wouldn't have impacted the winners though, just some guys mid-pack.

Interesting conversation about cutting the course.   Being basically a local, I thought about how easy one could cut out a loop... but you'd wanna know that you weren't seen... and not mebbe be a guy on pink wheels so someone you cheated wouldn't be all, "Hey, that pink wheel guy never passed me!"

And that part of Thread and Needle that hasn't been ridden in months?  I really wondered if I was on the course at times.  Mebbe a little assurance tape in the trees woulda been nice in there.
