I know it's a long way away, but this sounds like a pretty bad ass event!

From the link here: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
On to the main event! Saturday morning will kick off with a grueling 50-miler with a twist, for the first time ever, competitors will be able to ride non-mountain bike trails at the Greenway. This means be prepared to rough it through horse trails (potentially carrying your bike at times), up stairs, and over bridges. There will be no pre riding the course and we will not reveal the course map until the Friday of the race - this is not for the faint of heart.

so who's with me on this?!

This looks interesting! They are going to use a lot of trails that are typically just for hiking and horses....Some of those hiking trails will be a hoot to ride!

Interest def piqued.

Like the idea of a 50 miler on trails we don't normally ride.

Meh (once again) on the classes.  Open male, open female, and master's 40+.

*complained the 50 year old man riding a single speed*

I’d be happy with a SS category. Sadly it would probably just be the two of us.

I see mention of beer so there is that even.
I did not see the entry fee or classes info.  Did I miss it?

Anybody know if they are going to do a 25 mile option on Saturday as the header seems to indicate?

I'm sure Andy Barnes, Tsui, and I would like to add to the mix in the SS category, if they were to run one. I'd like to find a way to play hookey from the bike shop for this one!

Well, there are shenanigans involved for time Saturday night.  I'm better at those than I am bike racing at this point.

Looks like it could be fun and a challenge, unless the miles of trail we have never ridden are horse paths. The new bike trails out there are pretty mundane compared to the old stuff, so if the horse paths are boring then it wouldn't be worth it. The hiking trails would definitely be a blast, but not having a race trail map until the day before seems kinda lame to me.

Anyone have a horse and can do some recon?

having a map would just make people antsy to ride the trails they aren't allowed to, so i get it. just show up and be surprised, isn't that half the fun anyway?!

Completely agree. I have to tip my hat to Springs for the show they are putting on.  Beer, camping, bikes on the horse trails, live music,  and shenanigans.  This isn't the Springs that I remember.  I might sign up for the whole shebang as it sounds like its gonna be a hoot.

I did the Fonta Flora Barnburner in Morganton last year.   Finishing at the brewery was enough incentive to get me out retirement.  I figure I'm good for one event a year and this might be the one for 2019....

Get Joe T, Rich D, etc, a case of Red Bull and a bottle of vodka and this is a done deal.

The Redbull and vodka was MarkB's thing who also was a Springs regular.  Plenty of nostalgia for sure.

Registration isn't even open yet... but that said, when was my participation any indication that something was a good idea?

The true irony here is that many moons ago they used MTB grant money to build all purpose natural surface trails, then kicked the Mountain bikers off and made them equestrian trails.  Now they act like they are doing the MTB community a favor by "letting you use them for this 1 time" to make some money off the community they were stolen from.  It's like someone stealing your bike and doing you a favor by selling it back to you.

I’m not doing it now since I missed the cut off date at the cheap price of $70 (that’s sarcasm). But for sure I think they shot themselves in the foot at that price point to begin with for the 50 mile race. Now that the price is $100 they have just chopped both feet off.

Wishing I woulda waited.

"While we never want to cancel a race, in situations such as tornado warnings, thunderstorms, heavy and persistent rain etc., we will need to cancel. Should we cancel you will be notified via social media, our website, and email. Should we cancel there will be no refunds as that money has already been put toward the race."

I'm optimistic, but if they do have to cancel, I hope that they use any money remaining after paying up front costs to build a bridge (on a bike trail) or something.

Prepping for mud here.

"each lap is around 12.5mi miles (with only about 3.5 miles of that being on mountain bike trails) which means for the 50 mile race you will need to do four laps..."

Nine miles on horse and hike trails in the (possible) rain.

while i understand the cancelation policy, that kind of sucks. it doesn't seem like its just going to be random thunderstorms this weekend either. it sounds like it could be a 50 mile muddy cross race.

I get covering their butts 100%.  I knew the policy when I signed up.

This was in the recent email:

"We are so excited you are joining us for the first ever Greenway Classic this weekend! This is a first year event so we are thrilled you are willing to ‘test the waters’ with us."

So hoping they only cancel if the weather is totally raining turds and lightning.  Otherwise, those of us that "tested the waters" will be full-on disappoint.   Well over $4k in entries right now.

Fingers and toes crossed.

sheesh. i really want to do it but when they are calling for straight thunderstorms, not just rain, its hard to throw up $100 right now. maybe tomorrow it will change to sun and 70.

It was hard tossing up $75 this past Saturday, but with all us bitching about needing more local events and then not putting our money where our mouths reside...

1.25" predicted for Friday with 2.84" on Saturday.  I'd think that the newer bike trails would handle the traffic way better than the horse (poop) and hiking trails, whilst also serving up less post-race kerfuffle.

Since it's only a "no refunds" policy, perhaps they'd consider rescheduling a modified event OR transferring to a future event.  Otherwise, those who chose to "test the waters" might not be all that thrilled on future ASCG events.

I coulda spent $75 on beer...

Dammit.

Of course, it's all conjecture at this point.

I'd love to know before I start packing all my gear Friday night... and well before I wake up to a 5:00 AM alarm.

If it's on, I'll go.

I might even finish.

Good (and bad) news:

Due to the 3+ inches of rain and thunderstorms expected over the course of the weekend we are unfortunately going to have to reschedule the Greenway Classic.

We try never to do this as we know you all have spent time training and prepping for the race. That said, we want to be sure that conditions are safe (and fun!) for competitors, and it looks like this weekend’s weather is not going to cooperate with us.

We will send out a reschedule date in the next week. We will automatically transfer all registrations to that date. If, once you hear the date, you cannot make it you are welcome to transfer your registration to a friend.

Thank you all for your understanding and we hope to see you all out at the rescheduled date!

I'm sure riding around for four to five hours with horse poop bottles didn't sound that appealing.

Hey if that floats your boat, have at it. You know, the whole consenting adults etc thing I guess.

Personally, when I read Sara’s email I went directly to the fridge and grabbed a beer. Tasted all the better for the waiting!  Biggest downside I’m seeing from the postponement so far is that my wife is already filling my schedule with honey do’s.

Cest la Vie.......

I was at work when I got the email.

They asked me to put the beer back in the fridge until 5:00.

Seems like they pulled the plug too soon.  It's been a good day for a ride.

Easy to say now, they also had to worry about the short track on Friyay.

Hey, they were considerate of our time and had bands and foodservice to consider for today as well. Mother Nature is a fickle b***h and the best you can do is make a choice and deal with the fall out.

Personally I took the opportunity to get a nice ride in this morning and snuck the convertible out as well. Sneaking one in on Mother Nature feels like skipping class. Enjoy the time you have and cherish it. More than enough time for trouble to catch up with you.

Looking forward to the rescheduled race dates.
Cheers
Jeff

I went over and inquired on their FacePage.

The "coming week" has come and went.

good point.

as someone who hasnt registered yet im not too concerned, but for the people who already did, its like having your money stuck in escrow or something.

FYI - Race rescheduled for 12/13-16/19. Registration can be transferred to Treeshaker event at ASC on 8/31/19 or to a friend. Sounds like a reasonable way to deal with things. Nice to have a few options for sure.

We were sent an email.  Will be interesting to see if they open reg back up AND how much they will charge AND if they still intend to do the whole shindig with camping and bands in DECEMBER and if they're going to have short track racing in the dark on Friday night when the original plan was to have everyone finishing before dark...

Treeshaker looking kinda good right about meow.

Looks like they are going to have some weather challenges yet again. Not sure if my interest level is up to freezing rain. Let’s hope the rain is minimal and temps max out for the weekend.
