Riding group for older or slower riders?
09/30/18 at 5:19pm
Print Post
Is there such a group?  I'm 60, new in town, been mountain biking for 18 years, still ride several times a week, and still love it. I used to be pretty good/brave/fast, but I've lost some Mojo over the years.  Older bodies break more easily and don't heal as quickly, so I ride a little slower and more carefully.  Any like-minded people out there want to ride?

Not a group, but similar in age.  I'm 65 and ride several times a week at WWC, weather permitting.  Usually ride late afternoons.

Thanks for the reply, traildog.  I've been wanting to try the WWC.  I'd be happy to join you.

Thanks, chris!  I'll see you on Thursday.  That's the other place I've been wanting to try.  I've only been here a few weeks and my rides so far have been only at Beatty Black and Blue, (going around the more expert manmade features).

Great, thanks.  I'll be in a dark grey Chevy Equinox and riding a black and green Intense Sniper.  I'll PM you my cell number so we can text, if need be.  -Mike

I'm sixty and slow and out of shape. I'm probably way north of you. But I try to hit LNSP, every now and then

I think that's about an hour north of me, but it's the third place I've been wanting to try.  I hear it's beautiful and would be worth the drive.  Let me know when you go and I'll see if I can join.

I've been cleaning, selling and packing up my home in California, then driving across country, unpacking and setting up a house in Indian Trail for most of 2018.  I have not gotten much exercise, so I'm probably right there with you in being out of shape.  Where did this gut come from?

No shame, man.

At our age the important thing is not how fast you can ride.

It's that you can ride.

I highly recommend you check out Anne Springs in Fort Mill. There's a $5 riding fee ($49 yearly pass), but it's well worth it and some of the best maintenance in the area. I'm usually there about twice a week. Be happy to show you around. I do mornings best any day of the week.

Hey I just turned 62 today, I ride every Saturday and Sunday, occasionally during the week. I usually ride Sherman, LKN, Fisher, Rocky River, Rocky Branch, WWC, Poston,
N Mech, couple times a yr Dupont/Pisgah or Virginia (Washington/Jefferson State forest) Im not real fast but steady, love to hook up with couple/few guys to ride regularly.

Greg, Black Tundra, Trek EX8 or Santa Cruz Tallboy...

Happy Bday Greg.   I have no desire to be fast anymore, got nothing to prove, I just enjoy the riding.  Let's develop a circle of guys to ride.  In the meantime, I would be interested in joining you somewhere this weekend.

I would definitely like to hitch up with you guys sometime. I'm 60+ and an early morning rider (less traffic). On the road now but will probably start hitting the dirt towards the end of the month. I'll keep an I on this thread.

No real group has really formed from this thread, but I've met and ridden with several great people individually at Sherman, WWC and Anne Springs.  If you don't mind riding at a slower pace, I'd be happy meet up and ride.  Let me know.

Concord area, also, looking for some folks to ride with. Many times I ride during the week as I am mostly retired. Ridden most of the area trails over the last 20 + years, but some health issues and age crept up. Many of my riding buddies have either given it up or moved out of area.

Could meet at Sherman Branch, which looks like it's halfway between Concord and Indian Trail.  (on the TT map at least)  For me, it's been fear of getting hurt and this gut that has been creeping up.

I'm newly retired, so anytime is good for me.  Love the mornings, but afternoons will be fine too since it looks like it is finally cooling down a bit.

Got hurt a number of years ago when I was going too fast and took a tumble.  Plus, now I'm 60, things break easier and heal more slowly, so I don't want to do that again.  Mostly though, I enjoy my ride more when I go at slower pace, taking time to enjoy the experience.

Which one? My suggestions as usual are Ballantyne District Park. Nice easy, new addition a little bit more technical but overall nice.
Matthews Purser Hulsey, old portion nice and with a lot of ups and downs. New addition nice and for now has two directions. (what I like of this trail is that there is hardly anyone)

Open to other suggestions of course what time?

Anne Springs has been my favorite so far, but I'm up for giving Ballantyne DP a go.  How does 9AM on Saturday sound?

I don't know anything about Ballantyne.  Big Chuck, are you interested in riding there?

If you guys wouldn’t mind I’d be happy to show you the trails at BDP. I live apx 2 blocks from there so I’ll just ride over. I have a black Trek Fuel EX and will meet you over by the soccer fields as described before. One caveat, this will be my first ride after collar bone surgery so no guarantees on pace. With the new loop we have about 3.5 to 4 miles of nice bluish green trails. Some very good flow sections that I think you guys will appreciate.

Great, glad to have you.  Collar bones get broken in bike crashes often, is that what happened?

Could meet at Sherman Branch, which looks like it's halfway between Concord and Indian Trail.  (on the TT map at least)  For me, it's been fear of getting hurt and this gut that has been creeping up.

Know SB well. Maybe next week in the AM. Have Grandkid duty this weekend and probably next/

Ok, I'm in a Chevy Equinox (compact SUV) that is dark grey, almost black.  I'll be riding a black and green Intense Sniper.   I'll wear my black and blue Panthers hat.  See you at 9.

Anyone else want to join?

Oh yeah, I know grand kid duty, and I love it.  I moved out here from California partly to do just that.  I'm newly retired and looking to ride anytime, so let me know when you can go.  Warning: I'm an OK rider with lots of experience, but I've gotten kind of slow over the years.

fyi the trail has a massive tree down on the techincal side before the switch backs.

also another tree down near the entrance across from the street of the shed entrance.

Just walked the dog there tonight trails look fairly dried out considering.

Did not check the flowy section

Yikes!  I don't mind carrying my bike over a fallen tree, but I wonder if the park will even be open tomorrow.  Let's check back here tomorrow at about 8am.

Totally on point as to the collar bone. Was planning on hitting Beech Mt the first weekend in Sept and broke the collar bone on a training ride the day before. Damn road bikes!  One month since putting in 7 screws as of this Thursday. Time to celebrate and do some riding.

Haven’t been on the trails lately but the neighborhood has dried out very well. My backyard has hero dirt tonight and is less than a mile away. I’ll check the web site tomorrow am at 8 and let’s see what’s posted.

Cheers
Jeff

OK, at 9:00, I'm meeting DG, and anyone else who is joining, by the soccer fields and the pavilion.  No idea where those actually are, never been there, hope I can find them.  I'm in a dark grey, almost black, Chevy Equinox small SUV.  I'll be wearing a black and blue Panthers hat.  My bike is a black Intense Sniper.

FYI the road has several turns going in, just keep going and you will come to a right hand turn when you get to the back of the Y. You will see a large pavilion and parking lot over there. Go ahead and take it and you should see us.

So far so good on the collar bone. At this point just sticking to green level stuff so I can get some cardio and muscle back. So long as I keep it rubber side down I think I’ll be ok. Traveling this week for work; but may try some blue level trails this weekend.

Hope to get back my bike by the weekend. Yesterday a piece of wood got in my rear wheel and broke the derailer. You might have heard me shouting.

Glad to hear the collar bone is good.  I'll be traveling as well, until November 6.  Let's ride again after that.  Rode Anne Springs today and planning to ride Beatty Black and Blue tomorrow early.

Sorry about the derailleur issues.  I hope it's not too costly.

I'm out of town from this Saturday until Nov 6, I'd love to ride with you guys again after that.

Going to WWC about 5 today.  Probably do about 1.5 hours to avoid the dark if anyone wants to join.

Would love to ride safe but time is an issue since I live in Indian trail. Maybe this Saturday morning?

I have waited to see the weather it looks like no ride for tomorrow. But if you do not mind I will take your availability for next time.

Thanks

Looks like the road for sure on Saturday.  Probably won't be in the woods again until Tuesday.  Night rides are good too!

How about Beatty tomorrow sometime?  I'm in for riding this weekend DG, if that's all you have time for.  Being retired, my schedule is open.

OK, meet in the first parking lot past the guard shack off of 104 Adventure Rd?  Warning: I guess I'm pretty slow.  Didn't think I was until I started riding with locals around here and found they often have to wait for me.

I'll be in a dark grey, almost black, Chevy Equinox SUV and it will have a black and green Intense Sniper on the back.

Any chance we can push it back to 1:00?  I have the gas company coming out and they are being vague on times. Most likely not a problem but just in case .....  if it doesn’t work just let me know and I’ll figure out a way to make 11:00 work.

No worries on pace. We will take it easy and enjoy the ride.  I drive a grey C300 and have a black Fuel Ex. We met a while back at Ballantyne so I should be able to find you no problem.
Cheers
Jeff

Great Jeff, I think I didn't remember your screen name.  Sure, 1:00 is fine.  Plenty of time to ride starting at 1, but I will have to shove off fairly quickly afterward.

Anybody want to ride somewhere on Friday?

Anne Springs was fun today.  Weather was fantastic, perfect riding temperature. Trails were mostly dry, with only a few short muddy spots.  Thanks Jeff.

Great ride yesterday at Ann Springs. I’m amazed at how the new trails have seasoned and have a much more natural feel to them. Had a great time and will try to get over to USNWC tomorrow with you guys. In the meantime have a very happy Thanksgiving everybody.

WWC at noon works.  Looking to do about 1.5 hours.  Weather forecast shows 42 degrees at noon.  White Chevy pickup, parked near the cell tower.

OK, 12 noon, only been to WWC once before and I didn't notice a cell tower.  Is it pretty obvious?

I'll be in a dark grey Chevy Equinox SUV with a black and green Intense Sniper on the back.  Warning: I'm working on getting back into shape to ride, but right now, I'm kind of slow.

Kingsting, you coming?

Tower is actually part of the buss line tower, has a brown fence around it, about half way up the hill on the left side of the parking lot.  Only tower that has a fence around it.

Where is good to road ride?  Here in Indian Trail, the roads are barely wide enough for cars.  I don't have the courage to road ride around here, although some bikers do I notice.  I have been doing laps around the access roads at Col Beatty.

Can't really speak about the Indian Trail area.  I have several routes around my house that I ride regularly.  If you're not comfortable though, you won't enjoy it.  There is a business park in Huntersville that is very safe with bike lanes, well lit and wide roads.  Kinda far from Indian Trail though.  Most anytime you get out in the country, its better(safer, lower traffic) but you still need to be aware of traffic.  I have a very small mirror on the left side of my bar and use it a lot.  There are some good routes from WWC over towards Mount Holly that have low traffic.  Laps will work, sometimes get boring but they are effective at building stamina.

Trek of South Charlotte does a Sunday am ride that’s supposed to be pretty good. Check with Ang at the shop for details.

Yes, and while the entire set of access roads at Beatty only add up to 3.5 miles, there are a couple of modest hills.  3 or so laps and I'm toast.  Not the greatest of fun, but better than sitting at home eating Pop Tarts!

EDIT:  Looks like rain.

Sure love to, I can't go until 1 though.  Let me know if that will work.

Had Beatty all to myself today and it never rained.

Yeah, bummer.  I'm going to do a few laps on the access roads at Beatty about 1:00 just for a workout.

I'll have to say.. Some things are worth riding 40-50 miles for. Maybe more.
In my opinion, a high end coffee mug aint one of them.  Smiley

I'd say that kind of flexibility is an endurance sport.

It's sort of like watching Alex Honnold rock climb.

Makes you just want to take your toys and go home.

His mother says when he was a young child, his natural flexibility would startle strangers on the bus and when he was being fitted for shoes. That's just something you're born with I guess.

So I went for some tests because I was getting out of breath a lot , in instances where I usually did not get out of breath. I got diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. And the recommendation my doctor gave me ,was to keep riding, but when I got out of breath. To stop and catch my breath, instead of trying to push through it. So I've been doing that all summer. I've sort of reached a pinnacle where  all I can do, is just try to lose some weight and enjoy being outside on my bike. But now, nobody wants to ride with mw, because I have to stop a lot Sad

Douglas, do you only ride MTB?  Just wondering if you have the same thing when riding on the road.  I know I don't get out of breath nearly as bad on the road.

I don't mind.  I like to stop, catch my breath, and take in the beauty of NC trails.

Same here.  I'm a lifelong asthmatic, and the steady pace of road riding suits me well.  I still love mountain biking but the harder efforts, such as an intense/steep climb, really take the wind out of me and I have to often stop or just pedal realllly slowly once I get to the top to get my breathing back to normal.

Over the last few years my road riding has increased significantly while my mountain biking saddle time has dropped, but I've found the consistent road riding has actually made mountain biking easier on my lungs.

It is more of a hard effort kind of thing. When I try to ride with a group, a social pace always turns out to be a little more. So when I rode bike, if I take a nice slow pace I'm ok. But hit a hill, I'm sorta done for. I used to love to climb, especially when road cycling. Now it seems to be getting worse. I like mountain biking because of the lack of automotive traffic. I was on the Itusi today. When I hit a climb and got winded,I jumped off the bike and walked. Seemed to help in covering more ground. This thing has really snuck up on me. Just last spring, I could do the whole Wildlife section with little discomfort. Now, I get so winded and get coughing fits. That I look for shortcuts to quit early😥

I never realized how being overwight affects being on the bike. So how do I lose weight biking, when I get so winded. Is it alright to go out and do a low amount of miles until some weight loss starts happening?

Gotta limit the caloric intake to take weight off or increase activity to burn it off.  I do both, but this time of year, its really tough.  Too much rich food and lots of rain make it hard to get on the bike enough.  I hate trainers, rollers, but they do work.  Just can't stay on them long enough.

DOUGLAS:  You may want to consider an eBike.  I test rode one today at Performance and was impressed.

I actually have an e-bike that I used as a second car to commute to work in California.   Never tried one on the trails, but I'm sure it would be a great help if you are having health issues.  They're not cheap though.

When I used an e-bike to commute to work in California, the lycra clad, bike racer dudes used to yell at me.  But who cares?

Then they use hidden ones in their bikes... I personally dislike haters/trolls/followers etc. They are against just because it is cool. In Italy every race has an ebike group. Of course you get pissed when you struggle and they pass you at full speed but at the end they race their own peers.

Sure!  I can ride in the afternoon on Sunday.  If it's too wet, I plan to do laps on the access roads at Beatty.

Looks like access roads is the only solution. I will on my mobile so we can decide what time to meet.

I’m on the slower side  Grin (about 7 mph avg) and usually end up riding alone, mostly for that reason. Always down to meet new riding buddies tho

That sounds just like me.  I enjoy the ride more when I take my time anyway.

Sorry to hear about your sickness, man it's been a bad year for that.  Like you said, rain and sickness together is a bad combo.

Hope this thread doesn't die.  I'm 63, and haven't been on a mountain bike in about 25 years.  Looking to get back into biking with a mountain bike.  I'll be slow to lack of fitness and age, but I'm a kid at heart and can't wait to ride again.  A buddy of mine has been into mountain biking for a while came up from Atlanta, and let me ride a couple of his bikes at Poston earlier this week.  He's let me borrow an old hard tail 26, but I expect to buy my own bike soon.  I can ride to Ballantyne District Park from my home for evening rides, but would be very interested in finding other slow riders to ride with wherever.  Very bummed the weekend looks to be wet.

Never too late to start!  I'm 66 and still riding, but you have to be patient.  I've been at it for 20+ years now.  I ride WWC primarily just because its close and lots of variety.  Rocky Branch is fun and Poston is tough.  Usually ride evenings.

As DG said, you are welcome to join us.  We have no expectations of speed or ability and a beginner should have little trouble riding with us.  The constant rain has made it difficult to ride, seems like it rains every time the trails begin to dry out enough to ride.  Fortunately, warmer temperatures will begin to dry the trails more quickly.

Just bought a bike and should pick it up next week.  Been riding at Ballantyne District this week.  I'll be riding evenings as work still gets in the way, and I'm gone most weekends. Having a blast so far.

Do any of you ride the mountains? Brevard, Fire mountain, Pisgah, etc. I've been living in this area over 12 years and have not ridden them yet. Mostly for the lack of someone to ride with. Would not want to get lost or injured in unfamiliar territory.

I used to go to Brevard 3-4 times a year. But then I got a medical condition that causes me to get out of breath really quick. If you do go alone, the area bike shops will tell you all the cool places to ride. There are some trails that are pretty straight forward. It's not easy to get lost on lower Black Mountain. Further away, off of 40, you have Kitsuma. Which is fairly easy to follow loop. I haven't rode much of DuPont, but Ridgeline loop and Burnt Mountain are easy to follow. I've done all of these trails by myself, and I don't worry about getting lost or injured. There's a lot of climbing, so hike a bike sections are safe

Would love to ride the mountains, but haven't been there yet.  How far is the drive from Matthews?

Depends which section of mountains but the most popular area is Brevard which is pretty much the MTBing capital on the East coast. It's about 2 and a half hours. Kitsuma is in Old Fort and is a bit closer. The closest section to get too in the Appalachian is in Morganton but it's the most difficult to navigate and I would not recommend for starting out. This area is refered to as Willson Creek area.
The closest and easiest place to start is Uwharrie NF, Woodrun parking lot.  It's only about an hour away and is less overwhelming then Pisgah. A good stepping stone.  Also Rocky Knob bike park in Boone is less then 2 hours away and is a great place to ride.  Elevation, rocks, features, but purpose built mtbing park with signs making it easy to know what your in for. Easy to pick a route that will work for your level of choice.  Also Bent Creek in Asheville. Just North of Brevard and a good taste of the experience but less overwhelming then Pisgah Propper.

A lot of folks consider Kerr Scott in Wilksboro the mountains because it lies in the Brushy Mountains. Great trail system. The Overmountain Victory Trail is really fun. As are Warrior Creek and Dark Mountain.

Thanks for all the info! I feel better about going it alone if I had to. I think Dupont is on the top of my list to check out. Let me know if any of you would want to put together a ride sometime. This is definitely a day trip for me or any one in the Charlotte area.

I was just at Lake James State Park in Nebo  last weekend, and not technically in the Mountains, but feels like foothills. Really fun flowy trail with a lot of bermed turns. It’s about two hours from here I believe.

I've mostly ridden alone for all my 20 year MTB career.  When I ride remote areas, I always carry my Spot personal locator.  If I'm ever stranded or hurt, I can get help via satellite uplink.  If I get knocked unconscious, I'm in deep doo doo though.

I rode Fire Mountain last month. Prepare for a lot ... I mean a lot of climbing but the Kessel Run downhill is worth the climb.

That's my only mountain experience ... so far.

Sounds good to me. Post up when your ready. I would need to know at least a week or so in advance to make plans, as I am still a working stiff.

That’s been on my list for a couple of years too. Please add me to the list and assuming work doesn’t have other plans I’d love to go!

Wow David, what a beautiful place to ride!  If we had paved uncrowded roads and hills like that in NC, I would be into street riding.

Nope but yesterday did a nice 46km mixed,  it was tough at the and at end my legs were starting to burn. It was not  difficult  as a trail (will get the video ready soon) but there were very few descent and most of it was non stop cycling. Plus a lot of gravel and that kills you!
